OSHA: Structural Subcontractors Service Fails to Train Workers

Oct. 19, 2017
Company faces more than $100,000 of proposed penalties.

Structural Subcontractors Service LLC exposed workers to fall hazards and did not train them to recognize those hazards, according to OSHA.

Inspectors found workers of the structural framing company, based in Birmingham, Alabama, were wearing harnesses that were not tied off to prevent falls.

“Falls in construction are a leading cause of fatal injuries,” said William Fulcher, OSHA’s area director, in a statement. “This company knowingly allowed the framers to work on the roof without fall protection.”

The agency initiated an inspection on July 7 as part of its regional emphasis program to limit falls in construction.

OSHA issued one willful citation for failing to protect employees from fall hazards as well as two serious citations for exposing employees to falls of approximately nine feet. In addition, the company failed to train employees to recognize fall hazards.

Structural Subcontractors Service LLC faces proposed penalties of $102,669. The company has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and proposed penalties to contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
