Do You Know a Hero?

May 29, 2002
If you know a person who saved a life, Washington's Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board would like to hear from you.

Nominations for the Governor's annual lifesaving awards currently are being accepted. Award recipients will be featured guests at the opening session of the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference, Oct. 30 and 31 at the Spokane Convention Center. The two-day event focuses on the latest tools, technologies and strategies for improving workplace safety and health.

All Washington workers covered by the workers' compensation system or self-insured employers are eligible for the lifesaving nomination. The heroic act must have taken place between July 1, 2001, and June 30, 2002, any day or time, anywhere in the world.

The hero or heroine must have performed "hands-on" aid in saving a life. For law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other emergency aid professionals, the lifesaving action must be "above and beyond the line of duty."

For a lifesaving nomination form and additional information, contact Char Alexander at (360) 902-5446 or Melodies Hess at (360) 902-5415. The form is available online at www.LNI.wa.gov/wisha/gov-conf. The deadline for applications is July 31.

The Washington Department of Labor and Industries manages the state's workers' compensation system. It provides coverage for more than 163,000 employers and 1.9 million workers. The agency is also responsible for administration and enforcement of the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA).
