Below-zero weather across the country already has claimed 11 lives, according to news reports.

The new year has brought record-breaking temperatures across the country, and news reports indicate the cold weather is here to stay.

So far, 11 people have died as a direct result of the winter weather, according to CNN. Because of this, organizations such as the Illinois chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) are providing tips to keep warm and stay safe.

"Illinois temperatures have reached extremely dangerous levels.
