The current regulation compels employers to report fatalities and in-patient hospitalizations of three or more employees within 8 hours.
In addition, OSHA proposes to update Appendix A of the recordkeeping rule, which lists industries partially exempt from the requirements to maintain work-related injury or illness logs based on low injury and illness rates.
The agency published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for these revisions on June 22. The comment period originally closed Sept. 20. OSHA reopened this rulemaking record and extended the comment period based on a request made by the National Automobile Dealers Association.
When OSHA first proposed this rulemaking, Administrator Dr. David Michaels said the revisions will “better enable OSHA, employers and workers to identify hazards in high-risk worksites” and “enable OSHA to more effectively and efficiently target occupational safety and health hazards, preventing additional injuries and fatalities.”
