More than 2,500 attendees from 400 different industries descended on a rainy Orlando, Fla. Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 for the 32nd Annual National VPPPA Safety and Health Conference.

While a famous magical mouse was not seen during the conference, which was held at the sprawling Gaylord Palms Resort, participants had the opportunity to listen, discuss and learn about a variety of safety and health topics offered in hundreds of workshops and panels.

Although pre-conference workshops were offered on Sun. Aug. 28, Monday's general session officially kicked off the week. Mike Maddox, who retired as chairman of the board after 20 years, thanked the audience, and Mike Guillory, who will take over the chairman role, also stepped up to speak.

OSHA's Doug Kalinowski updated attendees on recent agency developments, and Carey Smith, president of the Defense & Space strategic business unit of Honeywell Aerospace, detailed how Honeywell's safety systems and VPP are aligned.

Elizabeth Smart, closed the 32nd annual conference on Thur. Sept 1. Smart was abducted from her Utah home and held captive for nine months in 2002. Her story fell in line with the event's overarching theme of safety and security.
