Free Online Access to Spanish Version of Fires and Falls

The National Fire Protection Association Center for High-Risk Outreach is offering free online access to "Los buenos recuerdos," the Spanish translation of a fire and falls prevention program for older adults.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Center for High-Risk Outreach is offering free online access to "Los buenos recuerdos (the good memories): Un programa de prevencion contra incendios y caidas para adultos mayores de la NFPA." Los Buenos Recuerdos is a Spanish translation of "Remembering When," a fire and falls prevention program for older adults, developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1999.

The new Web site provides implementation information and downloadable handouts, including lesson plans, presentation materials and trivia games, for public safety educators, members of the fire service, people who work with older adults and others using the program in Spanish-speaking communities worldwide.

Older adults have the highest risk of death from fire and falls in the home. Los buenos recuerdos uses group presentations and individual home visits, which may include smoke alarm installation and fall intervention activities, to present 16 key prevention messages (such as "install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of all sleeping areas," and "use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors").

"Los buenos recuerdos is part of NFPA's ongoing commitment to outreach within Spanish-speaking populations, especially in the United States and Latin America," said Sharon Gamache, executive director of NFPA's Center for High-Risk Outreach. "We hope that making this information accessible online will expand the use of this life-saving program."
