Todd Russell and Brant Webb, who work at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania, had been trapped since April 25, when what the mine operator is calling a "large seismic event" caused underground rock falls. Miner Larry Knight was killed, while 14 others managed to escape.
Russell and Webb were rescued around 5 a.m. on May 9, according to Beaconsfield Gold NL, which owns the mine.
"The tragic and tireless efforts of the rescue team and of the Beaconsfield mine management and employees are acknowledged with appreciation," the company said in a statement. "At the same time, our thoughts remain with the family of Larry Knight as they grieve their tragic loss."
Rescuers were not sure if there were any survivors until May 1, when they first made contact with Russell and Webb. From then on, the two miners received food, fresh water and other supplies from above ground.
