OSHA Administrator Charles N. Jeffress today will present the agency's highest award to Motorola Inc.'s Network Solutions Sector (NSS) for prevention of illness and injury in the workplace.
The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Site Award is given nationally each year to a handful of companies that demonstrate extraordinary measures taken to ensure employees' health and safety.
Bo Hedfors, Motorola Inc. executive vice president and president of NSS, will accept the award on behalf of thousands of employees based at Motorola's NSS headquarters.
OSHA approves VPP Star Site Award applicants only after a thorough review of a written application and an on-site visit to review documentation, interview employees at all levels and to certify workplace conditions.
Approved sites must then adhere to the key components of the Star Award criteria: management, commitment, employee involvement, training, proper hazard analysis, and effective preventive actions for recognized hazards.
OSHA's week-long evaluation in September 1999 at the NSS Arlington Heights facility, encompassed scores of employee interviews and review of hundreds of documents.
