Company Earns Award for Environmental Stewardship

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., was recognized for its successful efforts to protect the environment.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) was recognized by the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce for demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship in Baltimore's Anne Arundel County.

"We are honored to receive this recognition in Anne Arundel County, where we operate our company's largest generating facility, the Brandon Shores-H.A. Wagner complex," said Robert E. Denton, BGE executive vice president. "We are proud to be recognized for our successful efforts to protect the environment."

The recognition was made at the chamber's Beacon Awards ceremony in December. BGE was cited for its participation in a wide range of programs encompassing both environmental compliance and pollution prevention.

The Brandon Shores plant uses an advanced processing system that allows the company to recycle nearly 75 percent of the coal combustion ash from the plant.

BGE's recycling programs and pollution prevention efforts minimize our company's impact on land, water and air resources, said Steve Pattison, supervisor, air and waste management.

"We reuse or recycle electric and gas meters, utility poles and a wide range of equipment as part of our waste reduction efforts," Pattison said.

Since 1992, the company has recycled more than 75 million pounds of materials, and last year BGE purchased $440,00 of recycled-content materials.
