The CSP Construction Safety and System Safety Specialties exams are now available to candidates who hold the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation.

These specialty examinations, offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), are for CSPs who want to demonstrate their competence in construction and system safety.

"Several hundred specialists in construction safety and system safety participated in developing these examinations," said Dr. Roger Brauer, executive director at BCSP. "These examinations truly represent what the safety professional does in these unique job settings."

Originally, BCSP developed the Construction Safety Specialty from an initiative of the Construction Divisions of both the National Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers in the early 1990s and recently moved it to the new CSP specialty structure.

The new structure requires a candidate to hold the CSP credential in order to quality for a specialty examination.

The Construction Safety and System Specialty examinations are computer-delivered consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions.

There is a three-hour time limit and candidates receive examination results immediately upon completion.

The five major System Safety examination topics are management systems, analysis, design practices and hazard control, technical knowledge of systems, and administration.

The four major Construction Safety examination topics are construction means and methods, construction management, construction safety program management, and construction safety performance measures.

The "CSP Specialty Handbook" contains additional details about both examinations. It is available by request for free from BCSP or it can be viewed online at www.bcsp.org/Specialty.
