The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has completed its first comprehensive compensation survey conducted on behalf of the industrial hygiene profession.

The 2000-01 Compensation Survey determined the prevailing annual salary and total compensation levels of industrial hygiene professionals across the country.

The 70-page survey was the end result of a random sample questionnaire sent to 5,000 AIHA members. More than 34 percent of members surveyed responded.

The survey identified eight major job responsibilities in the field of industrial hygiene:

  • management/administration;
  • research;
  • education/training;
  • field work;
  • sales/marketing;
  • auditing/inspection;
  • consulting;
  • analytical chemist; and
  • other.

Annual salaries as of Jan. 1, 2000 from the primary employer, as well as cash compensation from that source for the previous year, were requested.

Respondents were also asked to provide information about their age, gender, experience, education, certification, number of people supervised, geographic location and employer.

Members of AIHA can receive the confidential URL address to access the survey as they renew their 2001 dues.

Nonmembers may access the information for $240.
