Security Professionals Prepare for Terror

Oct. 13, 2005
Security experts and professionals will gather for a free conference in Elk Grove Village, Ill. on Oct. 19 to discuss the latest trends in security technology and services, and how they relate to terrorism prevention.

Attendees of the Security Solutions 2005 Seminars and Exhibits, sponsored by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), includes corporate security managers, homeland security professionals, law enforcement officials, emergency services and first responder personnel, building management professionals, risk managers, professional investigators and business owners interested in increasing their security knowledge and effectiveness.

"Preparation for and prevention of terrorist attacks are concepts that weigh heavily on the minds of not only government officials but also professionals in the private sector," said Craig Lawrence, CPP, director of Operations at United Risk Partners in Elk Grove Village, Ill., and chairman of the Illinois Northshore Chapter of ASIS. "Terrorism is the subject matter most pressing for security directors right now, and in response industry professionals are joining together to deal specifically with terrorism and homeland security issues in the private sector."

The keynote speaker for the event is Howard Safir, who will discuss current trends in terrorism. Safir was appointed as the 39th police commissioner of New York by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in 1996. In his 4 years as police commissioner, he achieved a 38 percent reduction in major crime and reduced homicides by 44 percent, bringing the total number of murders in New York to the lowest level in three decades.

The featured speaker is Craige Maxim of Triple Canopy, who is currently directing the Executive Protection Division of that company. Maxim has managed several high profile details, including 12 months as chief of security for General Norman Schwarzkopf, and 13 months in Afghanistan as detail lead for President Hamid Karzai.

Other speakers include Mark Hall and Offer Baruch from Air Security International, who will discuss travel security and intelligence.

The conference will be held at Belvedere Events & Banquets, located at 1170 West Devon Ave. in Elk Grove Village. For registration information, go to www.northshoreasis.com//Security_Solutions_2005/index.asp.
