The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has named nine new fellows.

Fellows are members who have made significant contributions to the practice of industrial hygiene or related disciplines such as toxicology, occupational medicine, and health physics.

"It is always a privilege to honor individuals who have put such a great effort into this profession. It is a wonderful way to recognize the outstanding accomplishments our members bring to the association," said Steven Levine, Ph.D., CIH, then-president of AIHA.

The new fellows are: George A. Carson, Ph.D., CIH, industrial hygiene engineer of Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp., Overland Park, Kan. He is a member of the Mid-America Local Section.

Joseph "Joe" Damiano, MS, CIH, CSP, senior consultant for environment, health and safety of ALCOA, Pittsburgh. He is a member of the Exposure Assessment Strategies Committee.

Monty Herr, Ph.D., CIH, senior scientist/principal investigator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif. He is a member of the Northern California Local Section.

R. Timothy Hitchcock, advisory industrial hygienist of IBM Corp., Research Triangle Park, N.C. He is a member of the Nonionizing Radiation Committee.

The fellows received their certificates at a special reception on June 5 during the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition in New Orleans. The AIHA local sections and committee chairs nominate a maximum of two individuals for the AIHA Fellow Award.

The Awards Committee then evaluates and makes recommendations based on a candidate's being an AIHA member in good standing with 15 years of continuous membership, who is currently employed in the field of industrial hygiene. The AIHA board of directors gives the final approval.
