OHNs Encouraged to Empower Clients to Learn More About Bone and Joint Conditions

Oct. 17, 2005
Each year, Oct. 12-20 is recognized as the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade's (USBJD) National Awareness Week. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) is encouraging occupational and environmental health nurses to use this week to empower clients to learn more about bone and joint conditions.

Bone and joint disorders affect one in three Americans. Employees should be made aware of the burden of bone and joint disease, the lack of funding for research and how the burden will increase with our aging population.

USBJD is a global, multidisciplinary initiative targeting the care of people with musculoskeletal conditions (bone and joint disorders). Its focus is on improving quality of life as well as advancing the understanding and treatment of those conditions through research, prevention and education. Bones, and the joints that create function and movement, are connected by muscle and ligaments. Their state of health and how they enable people to lead an active and healthy life is what USBJD aims to improve.

As a participating organization of the Bone and Joint Decade, AAOHN supports the development of new research and education programs that will bring about significant advances in the knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, and increase the number of resources at the disposal of the health care profession and the public at large. Overall, AAOHN and USBJD are committed to making an impact on the estimated $254 billion annual cost of musculoskeletal conditions in the United States.
