High tech is the "buzz" phrase for the Risk and Insurance Management Society''s (RIMS) annual conference and exhibition this year in Atlanta, April 20-May 3.

The conference''s theme reflects RIMS'' advances in technology witnessed by the debut of the new RIMS Web site, http://www.rims.org, and the unveiling of the risk management search engine, http://www.askrims.org.

The conference kicks off Monday, April 30 with the RIMS State of Society Annual Membership Meeting.

Roger Andrews, RIMS president and director, risk management/general counsel for E.D. Bullard Co., will lead the meeting and then formally hand the reigns to the 2001-02 RIMS president, David Mair, associate director for risk management for the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The general session follows featuring keynote speaker, Dave Dravecky, baseball superstar, author and speaker.

Other hot topic sessions include:

  • "Terrorism and Business" -- Jerome Hauer of Kroll Associates is one of America''s leading experts on biological and chemical terrorism. With more than 20 years experience in emergency management, he will discuss the effects of terrorism on business.
  • "21st Century Business Impact Analysis" -- The threat of business interruption is magnified in the supply chain models of the new economy, making a company subject to vulnerabilities, bottlenecks, potential interruptions and contingent exposures. Ken M. Smith, Dell Computer risk manager, business risk management and insurance, will explain how Dell applied a modern business continuity model developed by FM Global and the ensuing results and benefits achieved through the process.

Additional RIMS conference sessions include: "Hacking Away at Coverage: Insurance Protection for Internet and Cyberspace," "Six Sigma Risk Management," "Speak Finance Like a Native -- The Three Hour MBA."

The exhibit hall doors open on Monday, April 30 at 9 a.m. and feature more than 400 industry specialist exhibitors.
