This educational program at NSC will include more than 220 sessions. These sessions range from broad-based to industry-specific topics. The educational program includes three days of technical sessions as well as professional development seminars that are offered before and after the general conference.
Keynote Sessions
The 2003 opening keynote session starts at 8 a.m. on Monday. This kick-off celebrates the 90th anniversary of the National Safety Council. A special 90th anniversary tribute to safety and health will touch on historical milestones in safety and will offer a surprising next-decade forecast by Alan McMillan, president of the National Safety Council.
The opening session keynote speaker is Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta, who will discuss the role safety professionals play in the safety and security of the nation.
John Henshaw, assistant secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, will update attendees on OSHA-related issues during Tuesday's keynote address at 8 a.m. He will be joined by Dave D. Lauriski, assistant secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health.
The corporate keynote session on Wednesday at 8 a.m. features Loring W. Knoblauch, president & CEO of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. He will offer insight into "The Challenges of Product Certification in a Global Economy."
Technical Sessions
Technical sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Monday sessions feature presentations about "Developing a Comprehensive Safety Program," "Mobilizing Supervisors as Safety Leaders," "Confined Space Safety Essentials" and "Continuous Improvement Processes and Their Impact on Safety," all of which start at 10 a.m.
Sessions starting at 1:30 p.m. on Monday include "Countdown to Teamwork," "Environmental Regulations: An Overview for Beginners," "Workplace Wellness: Low Cost/High Impact Programs" and "How to Do an Ergonomics Business Case." "Making Safety More than Just a Priority," "High Voltage Safety," "Security vs. Safety or Both" and "OSHA Standards and Guidance: Where Law and Policy Meet" are just a few of the sessions starting at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
Tuesday sessions include:
- 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. "Outside Contractor Safety Oversight," "Safety Management Systems: Are You Ready For Them?" "The Art and Science of Selling Your Safety Program" and "Developing Policy and Implementation of a Drug, Substance Testing Program."
- 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. - "Quad Graphics Building Collapse and Fire," "Safety Challenges of America's Aging Work Force," Tips and Pitfalls for Process Safety Management" and "Workplace Violence Prevention."
- 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. - "Safety in Numbers," "Safety Management in Micro-Sized Businesses" and "OSHA and Ergonomics: Responsibilities, Liabilities and Legal Strategies."
Wednesday at 10 a.m., attendees will learn about "Insurance Costs: Why are They Going Up and How Can You Control Them?" "Developing an In-House Emergency Response Team" and "Breakthrough Safety Performance in Your Organization Using Six Sigma and Kaizen Methods."
Afternoon sessions include "Proactive Strategies to Eliminate Musculoskeletal Injuries," "Managing a Hispanic Workforce," "Steps to Becoming a Healthy Insurance Risk" and "The Legal Eagle Side of Fall Protection."
Expo
The NSC expo will feature approximately 800 manufacturers of safety, health and environmental products and services who will meet with safety and health professionals to demonstrate and showcase the latest in safety.
The expo will be held Monday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by and visit Occupational Hazards at Booth 1419.
