While workers are safer than they used to be, workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities still are unfortunate realities. That's the message the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) will convey during its first Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) Week from Aug. 30 through Sept. 3.
The goal of the event, "Protecting Your Future ... Today," is to bring a greater awareness of far-reaching workplace and community health issues to the public. The week was picked because it includes Labor Day weekend as a means to help underscore the importance of employee safety and health.
AIHA has outreach and activity kits to engage all ages of the public in workplace and home activities on issues such as indoor air quality, noise exposure, ergonomics and carbon monoxide poisoning.Activities can include hands-on and role-playing situations.
"It is AIHA's hope that this weeklong celebration of the health and safety profession will encourage all individuals to evaluate the current status of their workplace and community environments to ensure a safe and healthy future for themselves," AIHA President James Thornton said.
