ASSE Commends Senators Who Supported 'ANSI Amendment'

ASSE president thanks senators who supported amendment allowing government employees to participate in ANSI standards development.

The American Society of Safety Engineer's (ASSE) President M.E. "Eddie" Greer recenty thanked Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) for their support of the "ANSI (American National Standards Institute) amendment" to the Defense Authorization Bill. The amendment allows government employees to participate in workplace standards development.

The Defense Authorization Bill (S. 1438), signed by President George W. Bush on Jan. 11, authorizes appropriations for the 2002 fiscal year for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military construction, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy.

The "ANSI amendment," passed by the House and Senate on Dec. 13, 2001, makes it possible for federal government employees to attend and participate in standards development activities. Lieberman and Santorum were instrumental in passage of the bill.

"Ensuring that federal government employees can continue to participate in the ANSI standards-setting process is necessary to ensure that the process continues to play a vital role in helping our members maintain and improve workplace safety and health for all American workers," wrote Greer in a letter to the senators.
