Workers Memorial Day Is April 28

April 27, 2004
Fire fighters and other local workers across the country will observe the 16th annual Workers Memorial Day April 28. This annual observance honors workers killed and injured on the job.

Each year, nearly 6,000 people are killed at work, and an additional 50,000 workers die annually from occupational diseases, while million more are injured.

The theme of this year's Workers Memorial Day is "Good Jobs, Safe Jobs, Protect Workers Now." As part of the activities, the observance will call on the Bush administration to protect good jobs that pay decent wages and provide health benefits and pensions.

The AFL-CIO provides a variety of materials, including talking points for speeches, sample letters to the editor for use in local newspapers, draft media advisory and press release, and other information on safety and health statistics and Bush's record on safety and health issues.
