CSPA Honors Earth Day With Commitment to Green Chemistry

April 22, 2009
In honor of Earth Day, the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), representing the makers of household, institutional and industrial products, shares its commitment to the development of green chemical technology to help foster improved environmental protection.

"Our industry believes green chemistry should foster innovation and create important health, environmental, social and economic benefits," said Chris Cathcart, CSPA president. "Our members routinely apply green chemistry and green engineering principles in their operations."

CSPA members support:

  • Initiatives that continue to foster innovation and encourage universities, educational institutions and industry partnerships.
  • Collaborative efforts, such as public-private partnerships, to encourage the development of consumer products formulated with environmentally preferable ingredients.
  • Initiatives that provide incentives for companies that are innovative and develop technologically and commercially feasible products using green chemistry.
  • Research that identifies opportunities for the use of green chemistry in consumer products.
  • Policies designed to overcome barriers to commercial application of green chemistry research and development efforts.
  • Recognition for companies that develop sustainable business operations, processes, and/or products.

"As with all products, consumers should give equal weight to product safety, efficacy, ease-of-use, availability, disposal, life cycle analysis and cost when examining the environmental characteristics of any particular product," Cathcart concluded.
