The 2011-2015 Strategic Plan reflects the consensus that industrial hygiene is an exposure risk assessment and management discipline under the umbrella of public health. AIHA revised core values and developed project teams to address organizational priorities in order to best align with this understanding.
Finally, the new vision statement, “Elimination of workplace illnesses,” guides the organization’s mission and culture into the future.
The AIHA Board of Directors developed the new plan with assistance from the Academy of Industrial Hygiene, the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation, AIHA local sections and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
This list represents AIHA’s core values as outlined in the plan:
- We prevent illnesses and injuries.
- We advocate and develop science-based policy and practice.
- We respect workers and communities.
- We support employers and employees.
- We respect our members.
In addition, the outlined priorities are comprised of redefined core competencies, redeveloped membership and local section structures, broadened international outreach and diversified knowledge-based products and services.
“I argue that whether we practice as specialists, generalists, or versatilists, each of us should be considered an industrial hygienist and find our professional futures captured in AIHA’s newly completed 2011-2015 strategic plan” said Michael Brandt, DrPH, CIH, PMP, AIHA president. “During strategic planning, we used our general understanding of IH as an exposure risk assessment and management discipline to guide project teams. Each of these groups will begin to transform AIHA so that we can continue to achieve our mission of protecting worker health in the 21st century and beyond.”
