N.J. Governor Tapped to Head EPA

President-elect George W. Bush is expected to name New Jersey Gov. Christine\r\nWhitman to head EPA today.

President-elect George Bush is expected to name New Jersey Gov. Christine Whitman to head EPA today.

Whitman, a moderate Republican, is said to have accepted the offer to take current EPA Administrator Carol Browner''s position.

Whitman is New Jersey''s 50th governor and its first female governor.

Among her environmental accomplishments in New Jersey:

  • She proposed the state''s first stable source of funding for land preservation, a 10-year plan to save 1 million acres of open space and farmland.
  • Encouraged the State Development and Redevelopment Plan to encourage new growth in cities and other areas where roads, sewerage and schools are already in place.
  • Improvement in state''s ocean water quality and record low beach closings during her tenure.

Whitman, was elected in 1993 and re-elected in 1997.

She formerly headed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the Somerset County Board of Freeholders.

Whitman was raised in Hunterdon County, N.J., and earned a bachelor''s degree in government from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1968.
