Progress Coal Co. Wins Mine Safety Award

The Progress Coal Company Inc. of Madison, W.Va., won the 2000\r\nRaymond A. Bradbury Safety Award for its exemplary safety performance record.

The Progress Coal Company Inc. of Madison, W.Va., won the 2000 Raymond A. Bradbury Safety Award.

Ben Hatfield, vice president of Planning for Massey Energy, and National Mining Association (NMA) President and CEO Jack Gerard presented the award to Progress Coal.

Established in 1993, the Bradbury Safety Award is presented each year to the Massey energy subsidiary that has achieved the best safety performance record.

Progress Coal Co. achieved a non-fatal days lost incidence rate of 0.69 for fiscal year 2000.

This means the company experienced less than one lost-time injury for every 200,000 hours worked.

Jim Gay, president of Progress Coal, congratulated employees at his company for being "sincere and conscientious in their desire to ensure a safe workplace."

During 2000, the team members worked 575,920 hours, produced more than 4.3 million tons of coal and incurred only two lost-time accidents.

The Bradbury Safety Award is named for Raymond A. Bradbury of Prestonburg, Ky. He served as president of the Martin County Coal Corp. for more than 23 years until his retirement in 1992.

During his years of service, Bradbury''s leadership and dedication to safety personified Massey Energy''s commitment to the highest safety standards.
