The N.C. Department of Labor presented more than 1,700 awards to businesses in 2001, and LaFonda Mauldin, safety awards coordinator, hopes to present even more awards to qualified companies in 2002.
She reports that safety award applications have been mailed to thousands of businesses. Employers wishing to download applications or fill them out on-line can do so at the NC DOL safety awards Web site. The address is www.dol.state.nc.us/osha/consult/safaward.htm. Companies can call 919-807-2908 to request a faxed application.
Companies that qualify for - and receive - a safety award place an emphasis on safety 12 months throughout the year, Mauldin said. Award recipients will attend local banquets recognizing that emphasis.
North Carolina Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry is committed to the Safety Awards Program and will participate in many of the award ceremonies. Award ceremonies begin in March and run through June.
"Safety is not a one-day event," said Mauldin. "It is a year-round effort by management and every employee."
Awards presented during 2002 will recognize safety records established during 2001. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 15.
Mauldin said there is a new twist to safety awards this year. The Department of Labor will have two levels of safety awards, she said. The criteria for the gold award is the same as in the past - 50 percent of the statewide lost workday case rate, which includes lost and restricted workday cases. The next level is the silver award. The criteria for the silver award are 50 percent of the state rate for cases with days away from work (does not include restricted workday cases).
