ASSE Kicks Off "Safety on the Job" Poster Contest

Jan. 8, 2003
In an effort to educate children on workplace safety, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) launched a "Safety on the Job" poster contest for ASSE members' children and grandchildren.

The contest runs today through Feb. 14 and is broken down into four age categories. The winning poster in each category will be featured in this year's May 4 10 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) week poster, which is distributed globally.

"So many of our members' children often wonder what their parents do when they go to work each day," ASSE President Mark Hansen, PE, CSP, said. "This contest will not only be fun, but will help children understand that every day the millions of people who go to and return home from work safely do so due to the efforts of many unsung heroes such as their parents the occupational safety, health and environmental professionals."

Before you know it, "our children will be entering the workplace themselves and should be aware of what constitutes safety on the job for their own protection," Hansen added.

Entry is open to ASSE members' children and grandchildren between the ages of 5 and 12. There will be four age categories with a winner from each age category: ages 5-6; ages 7-8; ages 9-10; and ages 11-12. An independent panel of judges will select the four winning entries that best illustrate the theme "Safety on the Job." Prizes awarded to each winner will include a $1,000 savings bond.

The poster should be 11 inches by 14 inches and the drawing must illustrate an example of safety at work. Entries should be sent to: ASSE Children's Poster Contest, American Society of Safety Engineers, 1800 E. Oakton Street, Des Plaines, IL 60018. The back of each poster must have the contestant's name, age, address, contact information, parents/grandparents' ASSE membership number and, if possible, the name of the school they attend and their hobbies. The winning entries will be announced Tuesday, March 18.

In addition to being featured on the NAOSH poster, the posters will also be displayed at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition scheduled for June 22-25 in Denver and in ASSE publications and communications.

The entry form and contest rules along with examples of children's illustrations of workplace safety can be found on ASSE's Web site at www.asse.org under ASSE news. Additionally, only one entry per child will be allowed and parents/grandparents are limited to verbal assistance only. All drawings must be an individual effort and be free-hand originals. Children and grandchildren of ASSE employees may not enter.
