Invaluable Resource Available from NIOSH

Feb. 28, 2003
The revised Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) contains the latest scientific information about occupational exposure standards.

This pocket guide is the latest printing of scientific information on industrial hygiene for workers, employers\\ and occupational health professionals.

The guide presents key information for 677 chemicals or substance groupings that are found in the work environment, and is presented in tabular form to provide a quick, convenient source of general industrial hygiene practices. Information in the pocket guide includes:

  • Chemical structure or formulas
  • Identification codes and synonyms
  • Exposure limits
  • Chemical and physical properties
  • Incompatibilities and reactivities
  • Measurement methods
  • Respirator selections
  • Signs and symptoms of exposure
  • Procedures for emergency treatment

The chemicals or substances contained in this revision include all substances for which NIOSH has recommended exposure limits (RELs) and those with permissible exposure limits (PELs) as found in OSHA's General Industry Air Contaminants Standard (29 CFR 1910.1000).

A handy, spiral-bound, 8-1/2 x 4-3/4" field manual, the guide can be ordered from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS).

"The guide continues to be an important reference for first responders to safety and disaster situations," said Wayne Strickland, NTIS product manager. NTIS is the federal government's central source for the sale of scientific, technical, engineering and related business information produced by or for the U.S. government and complementary material from international sources.
