MACOSH to Hold Two-Day Meeting in September

Aug. 30, 2006
The Maritime Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH), which advises OSHA on worker safety and health issues for the maritime industry, will hold a 2-day meeting Sept. 26-27 at the Department of Labor's main office in Washington, D.C.

The meeting is the first since Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao earlier this month re-established the committee's charter, which had expired on April 1, 2005.

Agenda items for the meeting will include discussions of various OSHA programs and activities, including standards and guidance, enforcement, cooperative programs and science, technology and medicine. Also on tap are discussions for forming MACOSH work groups, identification of maritime safety and health issues and radiation screening of cargo containers.

The committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 in conference room C-5521, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 27 in conference room N-3437. The Department of Labor is located at 200 Constitution Ave., N.W., in Washington D.C.

MACOSH was established to advise the assistant secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health on issues relating to occupational safety and health for workers involved in shipbuilding, ship breaking, ship repair and long shoring in the maritime industries.

Written comments and requests to make oral presentations may be submitted to Vanessa Welch by Sept. 12 at the Office of Maritime, OSHA, U.S. Department of Labor, Room N-3609, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington D.C., 20210. Presentation requests should specify the amount of time desired, the capacity in which the person will appear and an outline of the presentation. Requests to speak may be granted as time permits.

Individuals with disabilities wishing to attend the meeting and who require special accommodations should contact Welch at (202) 693-2086 not later than Sept. 19.

Notice of the MACOSH meeting appears in the Aug. 30 Federal Register.
