May 2-8 is NAOSH Week

May 3, 2010
This year’s annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, “Mission NAOSH 2010: Safe Workplaces,” takes place May 2-8 to raise awareness about occupational safety, health and the environment. NAOSH Week kicked off with events May 2 and 3 in Washington, D.C., and Canada.

NAOSH Week is led by American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and OSHA’s Alliance Program participants, among other partners throughout North America. Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHP) Day is recognized during NAOSH Week on May 5.

“Not everyone knows that we work tirelessly across all industries and around the world to prevent harm to people, protect property and help our employers be good environmental stewards,” said ASSE President Christopher Patton in a blog entry about NAOSH Week. “We must continue to educate the public and our communities about occupational safety and our great profession.”

Kick-off events in Washington, D.C., included brunch at the National Zoo on May 2, along with a May 3 event featuring OSHA, CSSE and ASSE officials and more than 60 partner organizations at the U.S. Department of Labor Frances Perkins Building Auditorium.

ASSE urged EHS professionals to help celebrate NAOSH Week by sponsoring a child in the annual ASSE Kids’ Safety-on-the-Job poster contest; hosting a workplace safety fair at your company or in your community; sending a NAOSH Week and OSHP Day proclamation request to your state, county or city government (see http://www.asse.org/naosh09 for samples); sending out local news releases on important workplace safety tips; and including information about NAOSH Week in your company newsletter.

“By supporting NAOSH Week and OSHP Day you contribute to our profession, and advance our professionals and ASSE,” Patton wrote in his blog. “You also make a major difference by providing your friends, colleagues and communities with important information that can help save lives and prevent injuries. Each year, we reach more and more people with the message to work safely. Let’s keep the momentum going in 2010!”
