Salute Your EHS Professional on May 4

May 4, 2011
On May 4, EHS professionals’ hard work and dedication to workplace safety will be honored as part of Occupational Safety and Health Professionals (OSHP) Day.

OSHP Day was created 5 years ago as part of North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week to honor professionals who dedicate their lives to protecting employees, workplaces and the environment. The event falls on the Wednesday of NAOSH Week each year.

According to the American Society of Safety Engineers, which sponsors NAOSH Week along with its Canadian counterpart, OSHP Day is also meant to “raise awareness and pride in the profession,” which is “one of the most challenging and rewarding career fields.”

To recognize these dedicated safety professionals, ASSE has established a special Web page that salutes EHS professionals from across the nation. For example, Sam Kennedy reduced workplace injuries by 60 percent at the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center; Michelle Demarest focuses on prevention through design at The Walt Disney Co.; and Rod McCain of Mustang Engineering urged non-safety personnel to become involved in safety issues. These are just a few examples of the EHS professionals whose hard work and accomplishments will be highlighted on OSHP Day.

EHS Today also will honor a select group of standout safety professionals and advocates in the upcoming June feature story, “50 Most Influential EHS Leaders.” But for now, take the time to thank the employees at your own company who work tirelessly to provide a safe, healthy work environment.
