Off-the-Job Safety: 8 Fireworks Safety Tips

July 3, 2019
Be prepared for Independence Day with these recommendations from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Fireworks display have been around since America's birth.

The first Independence Day display was recorded in 1777 in Philadelphia. Since then, cities, towns and municipalities have been hosting annual shows.

Even though the pops of color and sound seem so high in the sky, the hazards associated with fireworks always are close.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates there were approximately 12,900 fireworks-related injuries that required emergency room treatment in 2017. More than 280 people go to the emergency room each day with fireworks-related injuries in the weeks surrounding the Fourth of July holiday.

Hands and fingers are the most commonly compromised body parts, with burns comprising 44% of all injuries.

The U.S CSPC recommends eight ways U.S. citizens can enjoy the upcoming holiday and stay safe. View them in the slideshow.
