Creating Confidence: Oct. 14 is World Standards Day

Oct. 12, 2011
Friday, Oct. 14 is designated as World Standards Day, the annual event recognizing experts from around the globe who work with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and other international organizations to develop voluntary standards.

With a theme of “International Standards – Creating Confidence Globally,” World Standards Day 2011 will highlight how international standards for products and services support quality, ecology, safety, reliability, interoperability, efficiency and effectiveness. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) President Dr. Klaus Wucherer, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Dr. Hamadoun Touré and ISO President Dr. Boris Aleshin will mark the event by signing the World Standards Day message.

“When we fall ill, we rely on the health care equipment used to treat us. When we drive our cars, we have confidence that the engine management, steering and braking and child safety systems are reliable. We expect to be protected against electrical power failure and the harmful effects of pollution,” the IEC, ISO and ITU leaders said. “Indeed, one of the key objectives of standardization is to provide this confidence.”
