Disney Fined for Pluto's Death

Aug. 12, 2004
It was a scene out of a Quentin Tarantino b-movie when a costumed Pluto died during a parade at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and OSHA has fined the entertainment giant $6,300 and issued a serious citation.

Javier Cruz, who was dressed as the character Pluto during the "Share a Dream Come True" parade at Disney's Magic Kingdom in Florida, died when his foot became caught in a multi-section float as it was traveling between the staging area for the parade and the parade. He was run over and killed by the float.

OSHA categorized the citation as "serious" because employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by motorized vehicles.

Disney has 15 days to contest the citation, request a hearing before an administrative judge or ask for an informal hearing with the area OSHA director.

Disney spokeswoman Veronica Clemons said Disney World officials are reviewing safety measures with OSHA officials, and added, "The safety and security of our guests and cast members is a top priority. We continue to keep Javier Cruz's family and friends in our thoughts and prayers."
