Textron Fastening Systems has been awarded entry into the Occupational Health and Safety - North Carolina's (OSHNC) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). OSHA officials presented the award to Textron Fastening Systems - Avdel Cherry Operations in Stanfield, N.C., for its exceptional health and safety programs.
Avdel Cherry's North Carolina facility has gone six years without a lost-time accident. It is one of only 43 North Carolina plants and one of only 745 facilities nationwide to be recognized as a VPP star site since the program's inception in 1982. Instituted to recognize and promote effective safety and health management, the VPP honors companies that have injury and illness rates well below industry average through this program.
The award, called the Carolina Rising Star, was presented to Paul Moentmann, Avdel Cherry's general manager
"The key element in the Carolina Rising Star Program is employee participation in the safety process," said Paul Moentmann. "You cannot limit safety to a committee or management program. It's only effective if each and every employee owns it. All of our ACT employees are committed to the process to ensure its success."
To be considered for the award, facilities must pass a rigorous review of its health and safety programs, including management leadership, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training. Facilities also must have an injury and illness rate at least 20 percent below the industry average.
"Safety is a top priority within Textron Fastening Systems, and we are proud to be recognized for our efforts with this esteemed award," said Moentmann.
ACT - Stanfield produces blind fasteners, or rivets. It also is the home to the Textron Fastening Systems Automation group.
