ASSE Welcomes Fay Feeney to Board of Trustees
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Board of Directors recently approved the nomination of Fay Feeney, CSP, ARM, to serve as an ASSE Foundation trustee. She will begin her 3-year term on July 1. Feeney serves as the principal of Envision Strategic Group, which provides risk management and human resource services to businesses seeking to enhance their operational excellence and actively manage their business risk.
“We are very excited to have Fay join the Board of Trustees,” said ASSE Foundation Chair Cynthia Roth. “She has contributed much to the foundation over the years and brings great insight into the business of safety, corporate safety needs and education of the profession.”
Patio Enclosures Inc.
Patio Enclosures Inc. achieved its second consecutive year without a recordable injury in its sunroom manufacturing operations. While celebrating this milestone at an employee cookout, Ken Gould, president of the Summit County Safety Council, presented employees with awards for maintaining the lowest incident rate compared to similar companies; recording no lost-time injuries in 2007; improving lost-time incidents by 25 percent; and achieving 500,000 hours worked spanning 6 months or longer without a lost-time injury.

ESi University
ESi recently opened its Atlanta-based emergency management training center, ESi University, to conduct training on WebEOC. With its mock EOC and state-of-the-art technology, ESi University is expected to attract emergency management professionals from all over the world for training on emergency management processes and ESi products.
“I am confident that with this program, we will be able to create a better-educated pool of talent for emergency management agencies,“ said Jim Cook, the emergency management veteran who leads ESi.
AMECO
AMECO's global workforce of more than 1,800 employees achieved 20 million safe work hours from March 1, 2001 to March 17, 2008, with no lost-time injuries.
“AMECO employees continue to set the safety standard in our industry,” said Gary Bernardez, AMECO president. “This 20 million-hour milestone demonstrates how committed we are to a safe work environment for our customers and our employees.”
CH2M Hill
CH2M Hill, a global engineering, procurement, construction and operations firm, earned the North Carolina Department of Labor's Building STAR award for its work on the DSM Dyneema project in Greenville, N.C. The Building STAR award is part of a statewide program to recognize organizations in the construction industry that implement world-class safety management programs. CH2M Hill also was named one of Occupational Hazards' America's Safety Companies in 2007.
“This is a great accomplishment,” said Wim de Vries, DSM Dyneema's director of large capital projects. “This acknowledges all the work you put into safety, not only for this project, but prior projects here on the site as well.”
Industrial Scientific
Industrial Scientific Corp. recently announced that T.J. Bloom was hired as the director of operations for Industrial Scientific Americas, where he will be responsible for manufacturing, manufacturing engineering and supply chain functions within the company. Bloom joins Industrial Scientific after spending a decade working at Eaton Corp., where he most recently served as the operational excellence manager for the company's Watertown, Wis., plant. He has a BS in industrial and manufacturing engineering and is an ASQ certified manager of quality and organizational excellence.
Holcim
Holcim Inc.'s Trident Cement Plant in Three Forks, Mont., exceeded 1 million hours without a lost-time incident. The plant has not had a lost-time accident in more than 6 years.
“This is a very impressive safety record and we commend everyone at the Trident plant for taking safety to heart and developing and maintaining good safety practices,” said Patrick Dolberg, Holcim president and CEO.
BCSP Exams Change
Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) will phase out the current editions of the two examinations leading to the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential Safety Fundamentals and Comprehensive Practice. The exams will be updated to better reflect what safety professionals need to know and the skills required for the tasks and functions of today's practice. “BCSP is committed to maintaining accreditation by ensuring the highest quality BCSP examinations,” said Steven Schoolcraft, BCSP examination director.
