H.L. Bouton Co., Buzzards Bay, Mass., is recalling thousands of bottles of eye wash because some may be contaminated with an eye-threatening germ.

The bottles, recalled by manufacturer H.L. Bouton, sell under the brand names of Lavoptik, Zee Medical and Rapid Clear.

No injuries have been reported, but people should not use the recalled eye wash, instead return it to H.L. Bouton or discard it, the company said yesterday.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the sterility problem was discovered when a distributor sampled some of the eye wash and discovered a bacterium that can cause infections, possibly even blindness.

Between 40,000 to 50,000 bottles were sold to workplaces nationwide, according to the FDA.

The recalled bottles are:

  • Lavoptik emergency eye/face body wash, in 16- and 32-ounce sizes; 6-ounce Lavoptik eye wash, and 70- and 180-ounce Lavoptik eye wash in concentrate.
  • Rapid Clear eye wash in 16-, 32- and 128-ounce sizes; 180-ounce Rapid Clear eye wash concentrate.
  • Zee Protector II refill eye wash solution in 5-quart size; and 16-ounce Zee normal saline solution.

For questions, call H.L. Bouton at (508) 759-8000.
