MSA Designated VPP Star Site
MSA's Cranberry, Pa., manufacturing plant was designated a national Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Site by OSHA. The plant was recognized for maintaining a lower-than-average accident rate, total case incident rate and DART rate, as well as achieving an employee participation rate of more than 50 percent for designated safety teams. “The culture of MSA and the attitude of our employees are built upon having a passion for safety, and I am very proud that MSA Cranberry now joins a very elite group of companies that have earned this noteworthy distinction,“ said Bill Lambert, MSA president and CEO, of the VPP honor.
Liberty Mutual Award
Researchers from the French National Research and Safety Institute (INRS) of Vandoeuvre, France, received the 2008 Liberty Mutual Award for their scientific paper, “Progress in Understanding Processes Underlying Occupational Accidents on the Level Based on Case Studies.” The paper, published in Ergonomics, provides an in-depth analysis of occupational accidents triggered by trips, slips or falls on the level. The winning investigation was conducted by Sylvie Leclercq, Ph.D., and ergonomists Sandrine Thouy and Emmanuel Rossignol from the Working Life Department – Biomechanics and Ergonomics Laboratory at INRS.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based HexArmor announced Jim Shawver was hired as the company's new regional sales manager for the Northeast region. Shawver brings over 25 years of sales and marketing experience in the high performance textile and chemical industries and will provide a boost to a company that has experienced significant growth since it entered the PPE market in 2003.

Nevada-based Haws Corp. announced that Tom White, a 15-year company veteran, was promoted to executive vice president. He will be responsible for all sales, marketing and manufacturing operations worldwide. His former position of vice president of manufacturing has been filled by Aaron C. Cross Jr., who is responsible for R&D, product engineering, manufacturing and supply chain management. Finally, Larry Knight joined the company in the newly created position of director of sales for the academic/healthcare/government markets.

For her ongoing volunteer work and commitment to protecting people, property and the environment, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently presented Christine M. Sullivan of Littleton, Colo., with the Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service award and the Risk øManagement and Insurance Practice Specialty Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award. Sullivan also recently was promoted to department manager of risk control services at the Denver-based Lockton Companies LLC.
