On Saturday, at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time an employee of the Rothsay Rendering plant in Winnipeg, Manitoba was killed during a routine maintenance procedure.
The 35-year-old man was trying to thaw out a frozen pipe, when it suddenly burst, striking him as he worked.
Officials said emergency services were contacted immediately, however, the man later died of his injuries.
Plant management have launched an investigation into the accident and are working with officials to determine the exact cause.
According to the plants parent company, Maple Leaf Foods, the plant has an excellent safety record.
"This is a tragedy. Our first concern is for the family of our employee. The company will do all it can to help them," said Al Delichte, Maple Leaf Foods general manager.
Canadian worker safety and health officials are investigating the accident.
