More than 80 concurrent sessions, two general sessions, two complimentary conference lunch programs and an exposition make up this year''s American Society of Safety Engineers'' (ASSE) Professional Development Conference and Exposition.
S2K: Safety 2000 will be June 25-28 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
This year''s conference is expected to attract more than 4,000 safety and health professionals, such as safety directors, managers, safety service providers and researchers.
Educational sessions presented by the industry''s leading professionals include such topics as management, manufacturing, construction, health care, international health and safety, and the environment.
The opening general session begins at 8 a.m. Monday, June 26 with addresses by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Director Linda Rosenstock and Gen. Charles C. Krulak, a retired commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
This year''s conference has a new feature called the complimentary conference luncheon and program.
Monday''s lunch program speaker will be Michael Melnik, president of Prevention Plus Inc. Melnik is an occupational therapist with an advanced degree in exercise physiology. His lecture will focus on the prevention and management of work injuries.
Concurrent sessions begin at 1 in the afternoon. "The Criteria Used by OSHA for Promulgating Safety and Health Standards" will look at how OSHA determines the necessity of a standard using specific safety and health standards as examples.
At 3:30, M. Franz Schneider, president of Humantech Inc., will present "Strategies and Tactics for a Successful Ergonomics Program." Schneider will share key lessons from corporatewide ergonomics initiatives with companies such as DaimlerChrysler and Hewlett-Packard.
"OSHA Update" will feature Marthe Kent, OSHA director of the directorate of safety standards programs. Kent will provide the latest from the Department of Labor/OSHA on key issues in government affecting the safety, health and environmental profession.
The second opening general session, at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, will feature Roy D. Bridges, director of NASA''s John F. Kennedy Space Center.
Concurrent sessions begin at 10:30 with such topics as "CSP Examination and Salary Update," "Training Tips and Techniques for the Safety Professional" and "Evaluation of System Design Using Risk Assessment."
The complimentary conference luncheon and program continues at noon Tuesday with Dr. Moira Gunn, producer and host of the syndicated radio show Tech Nation ... Americans & Technology. Gunn will present her views on technology in the future.
Concurrent sessions continue at 1:15 p.m. with "Building a Better SHE Professional," "Ready, Set ... Develop A Loss Control Solution" and "Risk Reduction with Mechanical Guards."
John H. Cheffer, CSP, manager of regulatory compliance for Travelers Insurance, and Emory Knowles, CSP, CIH, manager of industrial hygiene and safety for Northrop Grumman, will present "OSHA''s Draft Ergonomics and Safety Program Standards: Impact on the Profession."
Kathy Seabrook, CSP, president of Global Solutions Inc., will outline how to strategically position safety and health within an organization during "Ten Steps to Global Safety and Health Management Strategy."
Wednesday, June 28 concurrent sessions begin at 8 a.m. and include such topics as "Industrial Hygiene Issues in Construction," "What is Fall Protection?" and "Getting the Best Out of Your Safety Officers."
"Roadmap to an Excellent Safety Program" features Patricia O''Rourke, CSP, manager of safety and industrial hygiene for Motorola. O''Rourke will describe roadmaps that obtained award-winning, best-class safety performance at three Fortune 500 companies.
Beginning at 1, afternoon sessions feature such topics as "The 21st Century Management Challenge," "Subcontractor Safety" and "Road Rage: Risk Reduction through Active Participation."
"Leading Your Company To Safety," presented by Donald M. Espach, CSP, of Espach Risk Control Strategies, will look at the gap between what is said about safety and what is done.
The ASSE conference exposition features more than 300 companies offering a variety of products and services for a new century of safety. Expo hours are 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25 and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 26 and Tuesday, June 27.
