The donation will be used for an endowed scholarship program and will be called "The Georgia Chapter of ASSE Annual Scholarships." It will be available to full-time students in the field of occupational safety and health that are either living in the ASSE Georgia Chapter county and attend a Georgia school or school elsewhere, or resides out of state, but attends a school in Georgia.
"This donation is another way our members have shown their commitment to the safety and health of Georgians and to protect people, property and the environment throughout the U.S.," said Michael Belcher, Georgia chapter president said during the presentation of the donation to Kennith Brock, an ASSE Foundation trustee. "By working with employers, students, regulators and legislators, we continue to invest in safety opportunities that have a positive impact on business economics and our quality of life."
In the Institute of Medicine's publication Safe Work in the 21st Century, Education and Training Needs for the Next Decade's Occupational Safety and Health Personnel (www.nap.edu) the government estimates that there is going to be a significant increase in the need for occupational safety, health and environmental professionals in the near future.
Applications for the first Georgia Chapter of ASSE Annual Scholarship $1,000 award will be available this Friday and can be found on the ASSEF Web site at www.asse.org, keyword, Foundation. Award selections will be announced the spring of 2003.
All told, the foundation will award $50,000 in annual scholarships this year for students pursuing a degree in the occupational safety, health and environmental field and $10,000 for research projects.
