Plants Win Safety Award

May 16, 1999
It's little surprise that 18- to 34-year-olds are at the heart of a nationwide increase in illegal drug use, and the manufacturing industry traditionally draws heavily from this pool of job seekers.

Mobil Chemical Co.'s Houston Olefins Plant, Exxon Chemical Co.'s Baton Rouge Plastics Plant and the Sabine River Works of E.I. DuPont de Nemours received the Distinguished Safety Award of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association in San Antonio.

The NPRA award recognizes facilities whose recordable incident rate is 1.0 or less for a 200,000-hour evaluation period with no fatalities or lost workday cases for 400,000 hours. Also considered are the facility's overall safety history over three periods, its contractor safety performance and its safety program.

NPRA spokesman Brian Walsh lauded the 1998 recipients of the association's most prestigious award as "exemplary." Total recordable incident rate among the three winners was 0.4 or below for their own employees with no lost workdays for the minimum 200,000-hour period. Their contractors' employees logged no lost workdays in 1998.

Individually, Mobil's plant had no recordable safety incidents in 1997 or 1998. Exxon's Baton Rouge Plant logged 0.04 incidents among both its own and contractor employees and no recordables throughout the evaluation cycle, and DuPont's Sabine River Works tallied an incident rate of 0.4 for its employees and 0.4 for its contractors' employees in 3 million hours worked.
