Fingerhut Companies Inc. received the Award of Honor in the Minnesota Governor''s Occupational Safety Award Program, which recognizes employers that provide safe and healthy workplaces.

This award marks the tenth consecutive year Fingerhut has been honored for its safety record in Minnesota and the fourth year the company has achieved the Award of Honor.

"This award celebrates the collaborative efforts of the safety, health and environmental affairs department, our safety committees and all Fingerhut employees," said Michael Sherman, president of Fingerhut. "We are committed to maintaining our superior level of performance and continuously enhancing our safety program."

The award recognizes Fingerhut for maintaining a below average accident rate on a continuous basis.

In 2001, Fingerhut had lost-time frequency rate of .2 percent, compared to an estimated industry average of 4 percent during the same period.

Over the past 10 years, Fingerhut has consistently reduced the frequency and severity of lost-time injuries.

"Fingerhut provides an excellent example of what can be achieved when a corporation makes a commitment to the safety and well-being of their employees," said Carol Bufton, president of the Minnesota Safety Council.

The Governor''s Occupational Safety Award program recognizes employers that provide safe and healthy workplaces.

The frequency and severity of accidents is calculated by the number of cases reported to OSHA, total days missed from work and total hours worked. Results are the compared against a national average.
