OSHA Schedules Free Training On Reducing Amputation Hazards

July 25, 2002
The Mobile, Ala. area Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office is cosponsoring a half-day training session to assist South Alabama employers in identifying, reducing and eliminating workplace amputation hazards.

The session will be held July 30 at the International Trade Center, 250 Water Street, Mobile. The free training, which begins at 8:30 a.m., is co-sponsored by the University of Alabama's SafeState Consultation Services and Small Business Development Centers.

The session will focus on hazards associated with saws, shears, slicers, slitters and various mechanical power presses - equipment that accounts for most amputations. Similar sessions were held recently in Dothan and Montgomery.

"An average of 10,000 on-the-job amputations occur each year in the United States, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data," said Lana Graves, OSHA's Mobile area director. "The training is designed to prevent amputation accidents which affect so many American workers."

To register, or for additional information, employers can call the University of Alabama SafeState office at (205) 348-7136 or the OSHA office at (251) 441-6131.
