Noble Corp. Chairman and CEO James C. Day accepted the Campbell Award from National Safety Council Chairman Jed Bullard and Exxon Mobil Corp. Senior Vice President Edward G. Galante at the opening session of the National Safety Council's 92nd Annual Congress & Expo in New Orleans.
This new international award, jointly sponsored by the National Safety Council and Exxon Mobil Corp., recognizes companies that demonstrate leadership and excellence in business and financial performance by integrating safety, health and environmental (SHE) excellence into their operations.
"It is a distinct honor to be selected as the winner of the inaugural Robert W. Campbell award from among such an outstanding group of companies," said Day. "The National Safety Council and ExxonMobil are to be commended for their efforts to raise public awareness of those companies dedicated to providing a safe and environmentally friendly workplace. Noble's commitment to those critical areas of operation has long been inculcated into the company's paradigms."

Bullard explained that Noble Corp. has successfully established and implemented SHE programs that effectively manage key risk exposures. Their training and certification programs are considered industry-leading practices. He said the company continues to thoroughly investigate and learn from every recordable incident and strive for zero injuries.
Galante noted that ExxonMobil's sponsorship of the award stems from the company's belief that "a disciplined approach to safety, health and environmental management benefits everyone and every aspect of our business. ExxonMobil has joined the National Safety Council in sponsoring this award because we want other companies to realize the progress and benefits we have enjoyed and for them to gain public recognition for their success."
Nineteen companies applied for the award and underwent an extensive application process that detailed key aspects of their SHE programs. An international panel of independent reviewers scrutinized each application in a rigorous assessment process. The assessments emphasized three categories: management, in which leadership and commitment figured prominently; technical, which looked in detail at the integration of safety, health and environmental systems into the overall business; and behavioral, in which employee involvement, motivation and training were evaluated.
Noble Corp. was selected for the Campbell Award based on a number of factors, including:
- Outstanding management leadership, commitment, support and participation in SHE-related activities
- Clearly communicated SHE policies and procedures
- Excellent communication of zero injuries as the goal and vision
- A workforce truly involved in and committed to SHE programs
- Accountability for behavior and performance
- Clear performance measurement and monitoring
- Superior management of key risk exposures through inspections, hazards identification, work control, job safety analyses, and change management
- Excellent personnel selection, training, and certification programs for each position on offshore rigs.
- Very strong safety performance results
- Thorough investigation and communication regarding injuries, incidents, and near misses
- Excellent support of field personnel by corporate SHE professionals
- Numerous partnerships with others in industry and regulatory bodies
