ASSE Foundation Seeks Ways to Prevent Workplace Injuries

In an effort to promote occupational safety research, the American Society\r\nof Safety Engineers Foundation is sponsoring a "Cash Awards\r\nCompetition."

In an effort to promote occupational safety research aimed at generating innovative and results-oriented ides, the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) is sponsoring a "Cash Awards Competition."

As part of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) grant, ASSEF is sponsoring the cash awards competition to tap into the experience and expertise of safety professionals, academics, researchers, students, employers and employees.

ASSEF has identified four specific areas of workplace safety research for the competition.

  • 1. Slips, trips and falls in general industry and on construction sites.
  • 2. Injuries and fatalities caused by exposure to unguarded machinery and equipment in general industry and on construction sites.
  • 3. Electrocution in general industry and in specific applications of the public utility industry and the Department of Defense.
  • 4. Fatalities and injuries during material handling in both general industry and on construction sites.

In addition, ASSEF is interested in suggested research ideas or concepts addressing personal protection equipment in any of the listed research categories for the competition.

The awards will be divided among the winning categories in the competition as follows: For each category there will be a first prize worth $1,500; a second prize worth $1,000; and a third prize worth $750.

This competition is open to any individual or group except those participating in its sponsorship.

The deadline to submit proposals is Sept. 1, 2001.
