AIHA Letter Urges Comprehensive Approach to Ergo Problems

AIHA wrote a letter to Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao to urge "all sides to move forward with a comprehensive approach to solving the ergonomics problems of\r\nAmerica's workers."

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) wrote a letter to Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao to urge "all sides to move forward with a comprehensive approach to solving the ergonomics problems of America''s workers."

In a letter this week to Chao, AIHA President Steven Levine, CIH, addressed the recent Congressional action to nullify the ergonomics standard.

"AIHA is convinced that there is strong evidence supporting the need for an ergonomics standard," the letter said.

Levine said that it is AIHA''s belief that substantial savings accrue to employers when effective ergonomics programs are in place.

"These programs typically reduce the frequency and severity of disorders, increase productivity and provide a strong return on investment at the same time," said Levine.

The letter encouraged Chao to take a leadership position in finding a new approach to an ergonomic standard, with serious consideration to "the need for new rulemaking that involves all stakeholders in the process, not just those representing industry and labor."

Levine''s letter concluded, "AIHA stands ready to assist you in any way possible."
