UPS Delivers $25,000 to ASSE Foundation Scholarship Program

The American Society of Safety Engineers\r\nFoundation and the United Parcel Service Foundation form the ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarship Program, which focuses on minority students in the field of professional safety.

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) and the United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation have formed the ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarship Program, which focuses on minority students in the field of professional safety. UPS will donate a total of $25,000 this year to the ASSE Foundation.

The ASSEF and UPS will award two $3,825 scholarships this year to minority undergraduates pursuing a degree in the field of occupational safety, health and environment.

Applicants must be from a minority, ethnic or racial group, be an ASSE student member and U.S. citizen, and have a GPA of 3.25/4.0. The application deadline for the UPS Diversity Scholarship is April 15, 2002. Applications are available online at www.asse.org/foundat.htm

Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social concerns. UPS is the world''s largest express carrier and package delivery company, serving more than 200 countries and territories with 360,000 employees nationwide.

Funding for the ASSE Foundation comes from corporations and ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide. Recently, the South Florida Chapter of the ASSE donated $500 to the ASSEF to fund education and research efforts.

The Paso Del Norte Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) on Feb. 1 donated $250 to the "America Responds Fund" as a tribute to the ASSE members whose lives were lost in the Sept. 11th attacks. The memorial scholarship, established by the ASSE Foundation, was set up to honor their dedication to occupational safety, health and the environment and will be given to occupational health and safety students. Over $4,500 has been raised for this fund since September.

Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Each year the foundation awards funds for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development.
