Dr. E. Scott Geller will examine the core components of people-based safety and will elaborate on the 10 distinctions between managers and true safety leaders. His discussion includes the ultimate human dynamic for industrial safety: interdependency.

While traditional safety programs focus on engineering, education and enforcement, people-based safety places value on emotion, empathy and empowerment. People-based safety leadership is based on the principle that everyone can be a leader in safety, regardless of assigned positions. By empowering and encouraging employees in safety, managers can become and create safety leaders.

E. Scott Geller, Ph.D., is alumni distinguished professor at Virginia Tech and director of the Center for Applied Behavior Systems in the Department of Psychology. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science and the World Academy of Productivity and Quality. A noted lecturer and consultant, Geller has authored 27 books, 42 book chapters, 38 training manuals, 192 magazine articles - including a recent three-part series for Occupational Hazards - and more than 300 research articles, and has served as editor or consulting editor of a number of professional journals. In November 2006, Geller gave the opening keynote address to a standing-room-only audience at the National Safety Congress in Orlando.
