Drum roll please…
With just over one-quarter (26 percent) of its members voting, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) elected its 2002 Board of Directors. The group also voted on an amendment to the bylaws that would have required more detailed minutes of board meetings. That amendment failed.
Donna Doganiero, CIH, has been elected vice president. Doganiero works as director for occupational health services, U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, Aberdeen Providing Ground, Md. Deborah Imel Nelson, Ph.D., CIH, was named secretary-elect. Nelson is an associate professor for the University of Oklahoma, College of Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Studies.
Don Hart, Ph.D., CIH, was named to the board of directors. Hart works for General Motors Corp., Troy, Mich., as manager, analytical services. Zeke Haslam, CIH, who serves as EHS director at Duke Engineering & Services, Charlotte, N.C., was made a director, as was Jeff Throckmorton, CIH. Throckmorton works for the University of Utah, Environmental Health and Safety, Salt Lake City, Utah as the senior staff industrial hygienist.
As the newly elected vice president, Doganiero will succeed to the position of president-elect, president, and past-president, over the next four years. The three new directors each serve a three-year term on the AIHA board of directors.
"We are pleased to welcome these individuals into their new roles. We are confident that they will be a continued asset to the association and will do great things during their tenure," said Henry B. Lick, Ph.D., CIH, CSP, president of AIHA.
Gayla J. McCluskey, CIH, CSP, ROH, QEP, advances from the position of president-elect to president. She operates Global Environmental Health Services in Radnor, Pa. Henry B. Lick, Ph.D., CIH, CSP, the current president, becomes past president. Lick operates Safety Health Solutions, in Grosse Ile, Mich. Thomas G. Grumbles, CIH becomes president-elect of AIHA. Grumbles works for Sasol/CONDEA Vista Co., Houston, Tex., as manager, product safety and occupational health. And Michael T. Brandt, Dr.PH, CIH, becomes treasurer. Brandt works at Los Alamos National Lab, Los Alamos, N.M.
These new officers and directors will be installed in their positions June 6, 2002 during the AIHA Business Meeting at the annual conference in San Diego, CA.
A proposed amendment to the bylaws of AIHA received 53 percent of the vote, short of the two-thirds majority of those voting required to pass an amendment. The amendment would have required more detailed minutes of board discussions and listing of board votes by individual member name.
"We recognize that members feel the need for greater communication," said Lick. "We believe that effective communication is a key member service. We will continue to work to bring the members the enhanced communications they desire while working to improve member services throughout the organization."
