UPS Foundation donates $35,000 to ASSE Foundation for Undergraduate and Minority Students

Jan. 26, 2005
The United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation yesterday donated $35,000 to the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation to fund scholarships for undergraduate and minority students studying occupational safety and health.

UPS has donated a total of $226,250 to fund occupational safety and health scholarships through the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation since 1996. This year the ASSE Foundation will provide six UPS scholarships to college juniors and seniors, including two scholarships from the ASSE Foundation UPS Diversity Scholarship Program. Each of the scholarships is a $5,250 award.

The scholarships will be awarded this June during ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.

"UPS is proud to continue its partnership with the ASSE Foundation in presenting undergraduate scholarships in safety and health," UPS Corporate Health and Safety Director Keith Jones said. "These funds provide safety and health students with the support they need to complete their degree and join fellow safety and health professionals in preventing workplace injuries."

ASSE Foundation Manager Mary Goranson said the donations have helped provide 41 scholarships to undergraduates, including several minority students entering the health and safety profession.

Students can submit their applications for scholarships to the ASSE Foundation from September through December each year. Applicants must be full-time students pursuing a BS in occupational safety and health or a related field. Applicants must be student members of ASSE, have a GPA of 3.0 out of a 4.0 system, be in good academic standing and be recommended by a safety faculty member.
