A Florida-based company claiming to be a "lead roofing contractor" in the state is facing additional fines for repeat violations.
OSHA cited Crown Roofing LLC to the tune of $134,937 following an inspection at aTamarac, Fla.residential job site.
Fort Lauderdale Area Director Condell Eastmond condemned the contractor's lack of regard for its workers in a statement, saying, "this employer's repeated failure in complying with fall protection requirements puts worker’s lives at risk."
The inspection was conducted under the agency's Regional Emphasis Program for Falls in Construction, which was launched in October 2017. The initiative aims to reduce fall-related fatalities in the industry.
OSHA's fall protection standard, 29 CFR 1926.501, has been at the top of the agency's most-cited violations for years. In 2019, 6,010 citations were issued, down from 7,270 in 2018.
Crown Roofing LLC is no stranger to the standard. OSHA has inspected the company 18 times in the past six years. At least a dozen of those inspections have yielded in repeat violations of 29 CFR 1926.501. The most recent inspection was initiated in November 2019 after inspectors observed workers on roofs performing tasks without fall protection.
A worker was seriously injured in a fall at a Naples, Fla. work site in 2019. Crown Roofing, along with three other contractors, received 12 citations reaching $220,114 in proposed penalties for that incident.
